Stone-Campbell Dialogue Study Guide
available
In
2009 the global Stone-Campbell Movement will celebrate the 200th anniversary of
the publication of Thomas Campbell’s “Declaration and Address,” the document
that gave form, content and shape to the our identity and vision of unity. (For
more information on the Declaration and Address, see www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/texts/tcampbell/da/da_reader.html.)
Through the
work of Disciples of Christ Historical Society, a 16-member task force (five
persons from each US stream of the Stone-Campbell
movement, plus the executive director of World Convention) has been established
for the purpose of promoting a worldwide celebration. The task force has
proposed Oct. 18,
2009, as the date for the 200th anniversary celebration when
congregations who are part of the Stone-Campbell family around the world will
join in using common resources to celebrate a “Great Communion Sunday.” A “Study
Manual for Local Dialogue” has been developed by the U.S. Stone-Campbell
Dialogue to encourage local contact, learning and sharing. The manual is
available at: www.disciples.org/ccu/pdf/Studyguide.pdf.

Unity a
Popular Theme in 2006
Our mission
partner, Victor Knowles at Peace On Earth Ministries has reported that the
inaugural Spokane (Washington) Unity Forum held
October 13-14 was a wonderful time of getting
to know brothers and sisters across the keyboard. The theme, “A
Family Reunion: Uniting Around A Common Savior” drew about 150
participants from 10 local congregations. The lectureship was held at Sunrise
Church of Christ in Spokane. For further information contact Victor
at victor@poeministries.org
Tennessee’s Freed-Hardeman University held a unity discussion and debate on
October 14 with the theme ‘What Will It Take to Be Together Again?” Bible
Professor Ralph Gilmore represented the a
cappella side and Cincinnati Christian University President David
Faust represented the instrumental point of view. The debate drew an audience of
1,500 and focused on issues that still divide the Restoration or Stone-Campbell
Movement. A two-disc set of the discussions can be ordered from the University
at https://www.fhu.edu/recording/lectureships/maincatalogs_singleitem.asp?av=v&catyear=0002

News
Briefs:
The Local
Arrangements Committee for the 2008 World Convention is
currently planning for the Communion service that traditionally closes the
Convention. In Conventions past the host country provided symbolic communion
cups that were also a souvenir of the Convention. They have previously been made
of pottery, wood and china. We anticipate needing 4000-6000 cups for Nashville’08. This year we
will have the added significance of being the inaugural service of the
Bicentennial of the Declaration and Address.

Plans are
currently underway to rebuild Bolenge Hospital in the city of Bolenge, Democratic Republic of the
Congo, which burned on June 13. The
hospital was built in 1928 as part of the Community of Disciples of Christ in
the Congo and serves the area as a
General Hospital of Reference, overseeing several other local health care
facilities. Currently they are operating out of older facilities until new
buildings can be erected. With financial assistance from Global Ministries
temporary facilities have been erected and converted. Plans call for a modern
150 bed hospital to be built in the next three years. For more information see
