News Briefs

Well wishes are extended to our brothers and sisters in Korea as this week they are observing the 75th Anniversary of the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ with celebrations in Seoul. Jeff Weston is one of the speakers for this event.

July 8-11 saw about 250 believers gather in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the 37th Caribbean Lectureship, drawing many people scattered among 7,000 islands and some from the United States for the chance to sing, sightsee and fellowship with fellow island Christians.

Congratulations to Remo and Susan Paul of Reaching Hand Society, Orissa State, India on the July 10 birth of son Adrash Stephen Paul weighing 3.45 kg. Proud grandmother is Iris Paul. The Pauls are Global Missions Partners of the churches of Christ in Australia.

Heavy rains in Haiti on July 20th caused severe flooding in mountain valleys close to Fonds-Parisien caused a staggering loss of property, life and despair to the people of the area, reported Etienne Prophete, Executive Director of Haitian Christian Mission, for more information email at hcm@southwind.net In August Prophete reported on their first ever Convention, which drew 3,500 people despite lack of shelter and funds. The great event was capped by 20 baptisms (one was 92 years old!) and 51 decisions for the Lord.

Well drilling programs in Vietnam are moving forward under the leadership of John Dean with funding from the Churches of Christ in Australia and U.S. Disciples Week of Compassion. The goal is to provide ten wells in Dong Tien and Dong Tam Minority villages as well as construct cement tanks for each well. Elsewhere, U.S. Churches of Christ have provided funding for a well project in Kpotonou, Togo, digging 45 feet to find a source of clean water. A worship service was recently held to officially open the well. Christian Churches New Zealand is providing the funding for 15 new boreholes (wells) in Zimbabwe, where inflation, at last report, was over 5,000 percent.

The June 14 online version of DisciplesWorld magazine reported the June 8th death of Dr. Howard Elmo Short, 99, a lifelong teacher, leader, author and administrator in the United States. Dr. Short’s impact on our Movement in the US is incalculable.
