Cayman IslandsThe World Convention is currently building a global reference for the nearly 180 countries and territories where we know there are Christian – Churches of Christ – Disciples of Christ congregations. Rather than wait for comprehensive, complete information we are putting up details that we readily have available. If you can correct or add to this information, please contact us with details at

Background
The largest of the British dependencies is the Cayman Islands located
south of Cuba and west of Jamaica. Consisting of three low-lying coral
islands the area of the islands is 260 sq km (100 sq miles). Today the
Cayman Islands are one of the world(s largest off-shore financial centers
offering a confidential tax have to 35,000 companies and several hundred
banks. Tourism is also a significant factor in the local economy accounting
for 70% of the island(s gross national product. When first discovered
by Europeans the islands were uninhabited and until the 1960s farming
and fishing were the chief occupations on the islands. The current population
of about 40,000 is of largely Afro-European descent with one-fifth being
an immigrant labor force from Jamaica. Among the immigrants from Jamaica
was Patsey Alberga. Sensing the need for Christ in the Cayman Islands
she begged for evangelistic assistance. In 1977 Harvey Starling and Don
Starks responded with a campaign. The result was that twelve were baptized.
Later William Worthey returned as a resident missionary under the sponsorship
of the Armory, Mississippi church, an a cappella Church of Christ, and
subsequent campaigns resulted in additional baptisms. Gary Kirkendall
and Cecil May III have also labored in the Cayman Islands. Two families
supported by the American Christian Churches and Churches of Christ have
done work in the Cayman Islands. These are Janet Wilson of World Mission
Builders with residence in the capitol, George Town and Bill and Monica
Wilson in Boddentown. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the
United States and Canada financially support the Committee on Caribbean
and Latin America, NCCCUSA and have provided assistance to the United
Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands (Congregational-Disciples of
Christ-Presbyterian).
