British Virgin IslandsThe World Convention is currently building a global reference for the nearly 180 countries and territories where we know there are Christian – Churches
of Christ – Disciples of Christ congregations. Rather than wait for comprehensive,
complete information we are putting up details that we readily have available.

Background
East of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea are found the British Virgin
Islands and as the name implies, they are a dependent territory of the
United Kingdom. The British Virgin Islands are the most northerly of the
Lesser Antilles consisting of for major low-lying islands (Tortola, Anegada,
Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke) and 36 coral islets and cays. The islands
make up an area of 150 sq km (58 sq miles). Most of the islands are the
peaks of a submerged mountain chain and enjoy a subtropical climate. The
islands were visited in 1493 by Christopher Columbus and for 200 hundred
years served as a pirate base for the British and the Dutch. Tourism accounts
for nearly half of the present national income for the nearly 14,000 inhabitants
with international business, agriculture and livestock generating substantial
revenues.
Some years ago an a cappella Church of Christ was begun by two men
from Caribbean Christian College in Puerto Rico but after they left
the islands their work faded. In 1983 Donald Hindsley arrived on the
island of Tortola and began to follow up on Bible correspondence work
that was sponsored by the church in Oxford, Alabama in the US. Three
members of the former church and thirteen baptisms as the result of
two crusades (1983 and 1984) formed the nucleus of a new congregation.
Hindsley was later replaced by Baptiste Joseph and subsequently by Billy
McVey.
