Background

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. It borders Guatemala and Honduras. The country’s capital city and largest city is San Salvador, with a population of 2.4 million in the metro area. From 1979 to 1991 the country suffered from a devastating civil war.

Religion

52.6% are Catholic and 27.9% are Protestant.

Stone-Campbell Presence

Churches of Christ entered El Salvador in 1965. In 2012 Herald of Truth, a media ministry supported by Churches of Christ, reported that nearly 30 Iglesias de Cristo (Churches of Christ)  El Salvador participated in a multimedia evangelistic campaign. Disciples have been partners with several churches in Central America, including Iglesia Bautista Emmanuel and Sinodo Luterano Salavadoreno, particularly to assist in war-torn El Salvador in the 1980s and 1990s.
