The Joy of New Space
As I write this I am waiting for the movers to come and take our desks and files to our new World Convention offices. Vine Street Christian Church has graciously offered us space in the educational wing of their building. For the past few days, several volunteers have worked to make that space our own—cleaning carpets, washing windows, moving thermostats, setting up internet access, and a myriad of other little tasks.
God is at work among us. God is at work within us. Our God is at work everywhere but it is exciting to see his work in a new place
LAST WORDS
When I was twelve years old, my mother fought a valiant battle against cancer. For the last three weeks of her life, she was sent home to be with us. I clearly remember the rhythm of my days. Going to school. Coming home. Talking briefly to mom. Going outside to play. One day as I left her to go outside, she said, “Watch out for Mark” (my younger brother).
Those words stuck with me. For during that night, mom died. They were her last words to me. And although she probably meant something like, “keep an eye on your five-year-old brother
RADNOR WALK—WINTER
After fourteen years in Nashville, I have finally found my favorite church. It’s called Radnor Lake.
I know the church is people, not place, but if you think of church as the place you meet God, then Radnor has become that place for me.
Radnor Lake is a small state park, just ten minutes drive from my house. The park consists of a beautiful lake surrounded by a walking trail. You can circumnavigate the lake in about 45 minutes.
It’s winter in Nashville, an unusual winter with snow on the ground for three weeks and temperatures rarely above freezing. Yet as I walked
The Seven “C’s” of the World Convention
I cannot say enough good things about the work my friend Bill McDonald did as Interim Director of the World Convention. The question I am asked most frequently is the same one he was asked, “What is the World Convention?”
Bill performed a great service by summarizing the work of the World Convention under a few headings, all beginning with the letter “C.” I’d like to adapt and expand that list to include seven “C’s” of the World Convention.
What is the World Convention?
1. It is a ministry of Christ. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus could have prayed
A Story From Haiti
At church yesterday, Dr. Vernat Exil shared a story from his recent trip to provide surgical care for those in his native Haiti.
"On Tuesday night the surgical staff gathered in our tent hospital filled with wounded children to decide who needed additional surgery. Someone started a song. "Jesus is all the world to me, my life, my joy, my all."
"So we stood there, surrounded by children in pain. Some had lost legs. Some arms. Some eyes. But they sang with gusto, "Jesus is all the world to me, my life, my joy, my all." We were surgeons,
BEGINNINGS—OLD AND NEW
The work of the World Convention is based on two firm convictions. God is at work among us. God is at work within us.
As I begin the work of Executive Director of the World Convention, it is certainly a new beginning for me and (in a sense) a new beginning for the World Convention. Years ago a wise old minister gave me this advice, “For your first year in a new ministry, become a lover and a historian.” By that he meant one should learn to love the people in that church just as they are, andDr. Gary Holloway Named Executive Director
